Toyota, the world’s largest car manufacturer, claims that it has created a new type of battery for electric cars, which will run up to 1200 kilometers at a time and will be fully charged in just 10 minutes.
As soon as the name of Thomas Alva Edison is mentioned, the first bulb of the brain lights up. It should also burn because this American scientist invented the bulb in the year 1879. But this great man had done a tremendous job in the year 1912 also. If the world had taken that work seriously, perhaps the story of cars today would have been different. At that time the world took Thomas’s work lightly. But now the world’s largest car company Toyota (Toyota Electric Battery) is going to do a work related to that. Which no one will take lightly.
After reading you will feel as if we are setting a meter for a story. Meaning where is American Thomas and where is Japanese Toyota. Guru, we are not setting any meter, rather we are talking about Toyota’s announcement related to electric cars , which once converted into reality, will solve the biggest problem of these cars. The amazing thing is that it has a little bit to do with Thomas too. In fact, Toyota claimed a few months ago that,
Now that Toyota has said this, it is obvious that it has to be believed. The question in your mind might be why, is Toyota the daddy of electric cars? Sir, don’t call him daddy but call him grandfather, great grandfather. Everyone tells but first let’s turn off Thomas Alva’s bulb. Meaning, let us understand their connection with electric cars and then we will ride Toyota.
# About 33 years after inventing the bulb, in the year 1912, Thomas made three electric cars. Not one that can be parked in a garage but can be driven on the road. But there was no commercial production and the fuse of the project blew. One reason for this was Thomas’s good friend Henry Ford. In about the same years, Ford had made a petrol car which soon became very popular. It is equally popular even today. The speed of cars kept increasing and then came the year 1990.
This was the year when Japanese car manufacturer Toyota introduced the world to its first electric car. The name of the car is ‘Toyota Prius’. Although it was not a completely electric but a hybrid car. Meaning it ran on both petrol and electricity. Although not fully electric, there was so much buzz that it was even called the “car for the 21st century”. Finally a new technology was ready to hit the road.
# The year came in 1997 when Toyota Prius came in the market. Just ten years later i.e. in 2007, Nissan made the first fully electric car by the name of LEAF and also launched it on the road in the year 2010. Both these cars are still on the roads with their new models and along with them, electric cars from almost every car company in the world are making their mark these days.
But a gap is still stuck
Irrespective of the company of the car, it means that even Elon Musk’s Tesla has a range of barely 600 kilometers. This too in ideal condition. Apart from the range, they also take hours to charge. Let’s not talk about slow charger, even fast charger takes 3-4 hours to fully charge the battery.
Toyota has brought medicine for this pain
Like we told above. The company claims that the solid state battery made by them is capable of running 1200 kilometers at a time. Will charge in 10 minutes. Believe that the problem of driving an electric car over long distances is over.
You will wonder why they are getting so excited. Brother Toyota has spoken and big media organizations of the world like BBC and Reuters have confirmed this. The seal is there so now we know which battery is currently in use. When will the new battery arrive and what will be the price?Li-ion batteries are hot right now
Lithium-ion is the battery that is used in everything from electric scooters to smartphones, electronics to cars and the International Space Station. If we understand from the electronic configuration, there is one electron in the outer cell of Lithium which is loosed to form Lithium ion Li+. This is a liquid which is called liquid electrolyte. Now since it is a liquid, there is always the pain of the battery swelling and bursting when it gets heated. We have explained in detail about Lithium Ion battery.
I talked about liquid deliberately because Toyota is going to replace this liquid with solid state battery. Solid means solid electrolyte. From being hot to bearing pressure, the strength is manifold. It will also be light in weight and small in size. Just understand the advantage of this that in today’s electric cars, a lot of the weight is of the battery and the frills that handle it. Toyota has not yet told what the technology actually is. It is also understandable. The company will reveal all the secrets only after fitting it in the car.
# When will she come? This is sad because according to the company, it will take three years to fit this battery in the car. That too in the company’s premium car model Lexus. Frankly speaking, it will take 7 years for the public to get this battery. If all goes well, till the year 2030. The company has also opened a new production unit for this.
# Price: This is also a pity. More expensive than current batteries. The reason is a lot of money, hard work and advanced technology. However, there is a silver lining to the technology. With time it becomes accessible and affordable. Usually this happens. Well, we are not saying this just to entertain. Three more big companies are also behind making solid state batteries. The names are Nissan, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Along with this, work is also going on to make electric batteries from sodium.
That is to say, if any of this happens before then Toyota will get an electric shock and if it doesn’t happen then we will have to pay more money. Whatever the case, the biggest problem of electric cars is over. By the way, should you buy a petrol car or an EV now? We remove the confusion.
